Consciousness appears to be the energetic convergence of atomic elements that form into molecules drawn together gravitationally into the planet of a star positioned to hold an atmosphere that supported living membrane systems who formed into a body of organs some of whom took the liberty to shape into the only surviving small group of physically and mentally unique hominids on the southern coast of Africa who refined their common mental and physical skills into a common culture of shared diversity bringing us to here and now reminding me of a story.
Human culture is a selective evolutionary force. Rapid cultural evolution is the hallmark of being Modern Human.

"Our own ideas are more easily and readily at our disposal than physical facts. We experiment with thought, so as to say, at little expense. This it shouldn’t surprise us that, often time, the thought experiment precedes the physical experiment and prepares the way for it… A thought experiment is also a necessary precondition for a physical experiment."
- Ernst Mach
Ernst Mach compares thought experiments to the plans and images we form in our minds before commencing an endeavor. We all do this — rehearsing a conversation before having it, planning a piece of work before starting it, figuring out every detail of a meal before cooking it. Mach views this as an integral part of our ability to engage in complex tasks and to innovate creatively.

break it down to the basic physics.
Conversation is the platform where minds meet to create and exchange ideas, hone norms, and forge bonds. But how do minds coordinate with each other to build a shared narrative from independent contributions? Here we show that when two people converse, their pupils periodically synchronize, marking moments of shared attention. As synchrony peaks, eye contact occurs and synchrony declines, only to recover as eye contact breaks. These findings suggest that eye contact may be a key mechanism for enabling the coordination of shared and independent modes of thought, allowing conversation to both cohere and evolve.

Due to their early expansion and separation, the populations ancestral to the Khoisan have been estimated as having represented the "largest human population" during the majority of the anatomically modern human timeline, from their early separation before 150 kya until the recent peopling of Eurasia some 70 kya.
Modern humans are an experiment in cognition. Our story emerges from a small community of perhaps the only surviving homo-sapiens who lived isolated at the southern tip of Africa for tens of thousands of years. There we evolved by gathering a nutrient rich diet that changed our brains. We refined a story sharing language and diverse symbolic expressions: the roots of art, maps, tools, and strategic teamwork. This cognitive revolution of human species emerged 70,000 years ago after a globally significant super volcano eruption in Sumatra and ice age African drought narrowed the human population to about 6,000 individuals into a population bottleneck. From the know-how of this group emerged the great thought experiment we come to call homo-sapiens.

One of the factors that make us uniquely "human" is our ability to reason, i.e., to cognitively analyze situations, predict possible outcomes, and make decisions accordingly. Broadly speaking, human reasoning can be classified as "inductive," which involves making predictions based on existing knowledge, and "deductive," in which definitive conclusions are reached from given premises.
What I find remarkable is that the universe started out as quarks and leptons we'll call it hydrogen and then after a long time the hydrogen became sentient it gradually got more complex and somewhere along the way that hydrogen started talking and thought it was conscious. - Elon Musk 51.45

Current evidence is that modern humans had begun to populated African but were driven to near extinction by drought and resource depletion. The entire human species was driven down to 6,000 individuals who were in the right place to begin a thought experiment in acting on their imaginations, applying complex skills gained new mental functions associated with access to nutritional tubers that other animals lacked the tools to dig, and an intensive marine diet rich in long chain omega-3 molecules.
On what is now called the Palaeo-Agulhas Plain, this small group became codependent on the rich marine environment for the nutrients that amplified everyone's strength and signal capacity at the cellular level providing greater eyesight, longevity, disease resistance, and mental creativity and mental health. This collective well being and cognitive expansion gave rise to stronger social bonds and collaborative networks. As a result of this marine based diet, humans have the highest concentrations of DHA omega-3s than any other species, comparable to dolphins.
Prospero:
Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd tow'rs, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.
